Arteta looking forward to title race that will now go down to the wire
Arsenal’s win over Manchester United now means that the Premier League title race will go down to the final day of the season, something that has delighted Gunners’ boss Mikel Arteta.
For the first time in 15 years, Arsenal sealed a win at Old Trafford in the Premier League, courtesy of a Leandro Trossard goal that proved to be the difference in a nervy game for both sides.
After 37 games, Arsenal moved back to the top of the Premier League standings, one point more than Manchester City, although the Cityzens have a game in hand, against the Gunners’ fierce rivals Tottenham on Tuesday.
Regardless of whatever happens in that game, Arsenal still mathematically have a chance to win the Premier League on the final day and Arteta is relishing that fighting battle for himself and his players.
Arteta now looking forward to ‘crucial’ final day of the season
Speaking after his side’s win at Old Trafford, Arteta said: “This result open another box, another window, which is the last day of the season.“
“Fighting for the Premier League in front of our people, with our families who are there. And we're going to live an amazing day together.”
“I can't wait to live that,” he added. “We talked about it yesterday and let’s open that door. Football is about moments and enjoying this journey and that last day is going to be something that I don't know how many times we're going to live together. So let's enjoy, let's prepare what to do, what we have to do, and hopefully a great outcome could happen.”
Arsenal will go into the final game against Everton on back of a five-match winning streak, having now won only twice in the league at Old Trafford in the past 17 seasons.
“It's a huge win,” he added. “Our history wasn't particularly positive towards this game and with everything that was at stake, we knew what we needed and we had to deal with that pressure and with that demand.“
Arsenal have now recorded 27 wins in the current campaign – which is a record for the club – though it might not be enough to win the title. Regardless of whatever happens, Arteta says he is proud of the accomplishments of his players this season.
“It will go down to history and big credit to those players and the staff for what we are doing. To achieve that with the long history that we have, that's down a lot to the quality, but as well to the determination and the mentality of this team and how much they want to win and how much they are willing to put in there to get results.”
